The River Deveron

The North East's Best Kept Secret

The  river Deveron due to its more illustrious North East neighbours the Dee and Spey is a well kept secret where anglers return year after year, generation after generation.

The Deveron rises in the high hills above the Cabrach along with its main tributaries the Blackwater and the Bogie.

The peaty water flows over a bottom of shingle and rock and is fast flowing in its upper reaches. Joined by the Isla it slackens its pace as it meanders through the fertile countryside until its 60 mile journey ends in the sea at Banff.

There are superb glides in its middle to lower reaches and due to the rocky bottom it has plenty of white water and can fish well in low water. It is prone to flash flooding and the water runs black but fines down to that golden brown colour which fly anglers love.

Salmon can be encountered right from opening day on February 11th anywhere on the river but the higher beats are usually a favourite. During April and May the brown trout fishing is superb with many specimens of 5 to 6 lb being caught each year.

Sea Trout start running towards the end of May until July and again a 7 lb fish is not uncommon.

The grilse run begins mid July but given water can start in June and can last all season. This is supplemented with the summer Salmon which can reach 18 lb. The back end run starts in September and fish can weigh up to 40 lb +. Indeed the British record for a salmon caught on fly came off the Deveron and weighed 61 lb.

Favourite flies include the Stoats tail, Munroe Killer. Willie Gunn, Ally Shrimp ,Cascade and the executioner. Spinning is allowed on most beats in high water and flying "c", Toby's and Rapalas are great takers of fish in high water.

Castle Water Huntly

We at Turriff Tackle have many beats to offer for let and this increases every year.

Our business is fishing and we have a large number of clients and anglers looking for fishing. We know it can be difficult to match a holiday date to an available fishing week but we do offer first refusal to those who register their name with us before we show the availability here on this site.

If you click on the beat header you will be taken to a map of the Deveron. There you can click on the individual beat to see some information on the beat and a few pictures of pools.

Not all beats wish to be included but many will be added throughout the year. If your fishing beat is missing ask  the owner to get in touch- there is no cost to come on board.

The information is provided for the benefit of the angler wishing to fish the Deveron.
